Current Study

I am interested in the genetic and cellular mechanisms that control cell fate decisions to produce the incredible heterogeneity of GABAergic interneurons. The general interneuron subtype seems to be determined as these cells exit the cell during embryogenesis, but the mechanisms that regulate these decisions are poorly understood.

To better understand this process, I am involved in several large scale sequencing projects to comprehensively define the transcriptome of different interneuron subtypes at distinct developmental time points.  With this data, we will then be able to mine the transcriptome of developing interneurons to identify novel genes and pathways that regulate interneuron fate determination and maturation. These studies involve a variety of exciting techniques, such as in utero electroporation, stem cell culture and differentiation, and next generation sequencing.
